Why do I need a Website?
The world wide web is now the most widely used information
sourcing tool. The web can act as an online brochure. It will save you
money on advertising, publishing and postage costs. Your site can be
designed to suit the needs of your target audience. It can be changed
as and when you want at a cost significantly less than the redesign
and reprint of a brochure. Contacting you is made easy through the use
of email. Many businesses use it to speed up decision making and to
transfer documents. International traders expect you to have a web presence.
How do I get started?
This is one of the biggest marketing decisions you
will ever make. We know and take this seriously. We will take you through
the stages. Contact details are on our web site. Make contact it costs
nothing to take the first step.
What is a URL?
Basically it's the address of the website as in www.tesco.co.uk
and it stands for Universal Resource Locator. These addresses are registered
with the relevant issuing body for a set period, usually but not always
two years. Thus it is vital to make sure your URL is renewed if you
wish to continue using it over the years otherwise someone else might
be able to buy it.
E-Mail Addresses
E-mail addresses will take the form of enquiries@yourcompany.co.uk
or jim.bates@yourcompany.co.uk with yourcompany.co.uk being whatever
URL we have registered for you whether .co.uk or .com etc. This gives
a professional image to your company or site. Please see each package
for the number of addresses you are allowed. You will need to own at
least one live e-mail address for us to divert e-mail traffic to. You
could for instance have enquiries@yourcompany.co.uk diverted to a webmail
service such as Hotmail so you can pick up any mail wherever you happen
to be or it could be linked to your standard e-mail account back in
the office. There are some restrictions on whether you can send back
mail under your @yourcompany.co.uk alias. This is dependent on the e-mail
service you subscribe to as some servers do not allow this kind of traffic
to be sent out. It is always best to check. back to top Can you create
features on my web pages? We realise cost will be high on your list
of concerns. The price will include consultation as well as building
and hosting your site. Some of the tools you may have seen on other
sites like drop down menus, links to other sites, hypertext links, photographs,
logo’s and banner headings will all be possible. We can, however,
create the look and the feel that you want for your site. We can quote
for a customised service or look at our menu of extras.
How can I be sure customers will
find my web site when they log onto the internet?
We will place relevant metadata in your site which
can be found by Search Engine Robots. We will register your site with
major search engines. Google is the search engine most used by all internet
browsers world wide but because it covers millions of sites the only
way to ensure getting to the top of its listings for a particular search
is to pay them or pay for an advertisement. This would be up to you
and Google direct. For more information on marketing your site check
out our marketing link. back to top Will I own the site? The web site
will be owned by you. It will be your intellectual property. We will
sign an agreement assigning copyright to you.
Will I own the site
As long as you have paid for the site and any work on it it belongs
to you.
What is Metadata?
Metadata is basically information about information.
It is written into the computer code so only Search Engine and other
Robots can see it and it won't appear on the screen to the end user.
Is consists a description of your site using terms which someone would
most likely type into a Search Engine to find it. back to top What will
you charge? We include everything to deliver your site live on the internet.
Some web designers do not. We know how frustrating it is to be given
a price to buy that new car only to find out that the cost to drive
it on the road is very much more than the quoted price. Remember to
check out your annual tax allowances as these can dramatically lower
the actual cost of setting up your web site. At the time of writing
these allowances are set at 100% against capital spend. Other capital
allowances for new technology could also be an attractive consideration.
What are Domain Names?
A Domain Name is the official term for a web address
such as www.billybunter.co.uk Striding 2 will check availability and
register your proposed web site address for you. This will be done as
part of your package and no further costs charged. URL's are normally
registered with the appropriate official bodies for two years. As long
as you continue to renew your web site with Striding 2 there will be
no extra charge incurred to pay for renewal fees. URL's can be moved
from Striding 2 to another company for no charge from us as they belong
to you, but remember that other companies will possibly charge you to
move the URL from us to them. back to top What is Uptime? Uptime in
the web industry is defined as the time that a website is available
for viewing by a user. Some sites go down for a variety of technical
reasons meaning that people cannot see them on the Internet. back to
top Where are your Sites hosted? We host your site on dedicated commercial
servers which are the biggest and best in Europe and which have an average
uptime of 99.8% so your site is almost always available day and night.
The advantage of such servers is that they are housed in buildings which
are fireproof, flood proof and bombproof and there are trained personnel
available at all hours to make sure that everything is working fine.
All sites are continually backed up on these servers. Your site is safe
in our hands! Whilst new information is being uploaded to your site
the original pages will still be available for anyone surfing the Internet.
New pages will, however, be available within seconds of them replacing
the old. back to top What if I want to make Changes? Changes can be
made at anytime. Some will be included in the overall cost of the package
but others will be charged for so it is best to enquire beforehand and
we will agree terms before work is started on your site.
